On June 30, a 40-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter were found in an advanced state of decomposition inside the locked bedroom of a condominium unit in Penang.

In a recent update, it was revealed that the woman had been suffering from emotional distress, allegedly triggered by her husband’s imprisonment a few months earlier, according to Sinar Harian.

“I don’t even know if they had food”

A neighbour of the deceased, who wished to remain anonymous, said the woman appeared increasingly distressed after the electricity to her rented unit was cut off due to several months of unpaid bills.

“I rarely saw the mother and daughter. From what I understand, the woman wasn’t working, and her husband had been arrested and sent to prison. With everything going on, she was probably overwhelmed, especially after losing access to electricity,” the neighbor said.

The neighbour, who has lived in the housing complex for 23 years, added that the woman and her daughter had only moved into the unit a few months ago.

“Imagine trying to care for a young child without electricity, that’s incredibly tough. I don’t even know if they had food. I truly feel for her,” she added.

The woman was last seen in May

The neighbour also shared that residents in the same block had noticed a strong foul smell lingering since June 21. Many initially assumed it was coming from garbage or a dead animal and reported it to the building management.

They added that the woman kept to herself and was last seen in May.

“She rarely came out of the house. If we bumped into her, she would just smile. The last time anyone saw her was two months ago. None of us expected her to pass away in such a heartbreaking way,” she said.
