It’s April 4 (Thursday) and the hype from pranks on April Fools Day is already dying down. Though, it appears that one Malaysian man’s prank is still in the headlines.
Using April Fools Day to prank people into thinking he’s dead by showcasing his ‘funeral’, it turns out that Namewee was using it as a gimmick to promote his new, upcoming song.
Taking to his Facebook page, he announced that the song, When I’m Gone, will be coming out today (April 4, 2024) at 4:44pm, making the time and date of the release as ‘444444’, which in Chinese culture means ‘death’ 6 times. April 4 is also Qing Ming Festival, which is when the Chinese community pays their respects to the deceased.
He wrote, “What people need to fear is not death, but that they have not truly lived. I wish everyone from all walks of life a healthy Qing Ming Festival. Do not fear death, but rather an unlived life.”
“Please stay tuned for the MV (music video), which will be released this evening at 4:44pm, April 4, 2024 (444444). We would also like to wish you all a peaceful Qing Ming Festival.”
Following all the controversy surrounding his April Fools Day prank, as people criticised it to be “too much”, it all turned out to be a perfectly-timed and rather smart gimmick to promote a song about death.
