An X user recently shared the vacancy listing of one of the most popular clothing chains in Malaysia, Uniqlo, which allegedly pays its retail associates a basic salary of RM3,o00 per month, excluding an allowance of RM150.

As for part-timers, Uniqlo pays around RM12 to RM14 per hour.

As per the job description, a retail associate must have a Diploma qualification or higher, be proficient in English, and will have to deal with customers daily.

The RM3,000 basic salary, however, was an increase from the previous basic for retail associates in 2022, which was RM2,400 according to its previous hiring post on X.

During the tabling of Budget 2025, the Prime Minister also announced the increase of the minimum wage, climbing from RM1,500 to RM1,700, which will come into effect in February 2025.

“It’s higher than the basic of an engineering grad”

Social media users, on the other hand, were shocked to see how much Uniqlo is willing to pay for the basic salary, and many said a retail associate with the company is earning more than they are making.

“The basic salary is even higher than my workplace, where I’ve been working for more than 10 years.”

“To those degree holders who earn less than this, you can start looking around. You guys are severely underpaid. You don’t necessarily have to work here, but it shows that your workplace is using you without paying you what you deserve.”

“That’s quite a lot for a Uniqlo part-timer. Cotton On only pays you RM8 per hour.

“This is much more than what an engineering grad earns. I salute you, Uniqlo!”

To those working, or who have worked in retail, what do you think of this pay?
