The one thing many interviewers or human resource (HR) personnel often ask for during job interviews is your payslip for the past 3 months or so.

For some, that’s just part of the process but many have come to not like this step as they believe the company they are interviewing for only wants to see their payslip in order to pay them as little as possible instead of the real value of the job they’re taking on.

Farid Affy took to his Twitter account to showcase how a woman had her job interview cancelled by the interviewer when she chose not to provide them with her past months payslips.

He wrote, “This company cancelled their interview with this woman because she refused to show them 3 months of her payslip that was requested by the company. How would you feel if this happened to you? Discuss it.”

Here is the interaction between the woman and the interviewer when the interview got cancelled:

The interviewer clarified, “The reason why I am asking this is because the hiring manager would like to know the actual salary you are earning before any negotiation can be made during the interview.”

Many have since shared that they too do not like to provide their past months payslips as they think it is a company’s way of devaluing them

Payslip 2

“It’s the value that I’d bring to the table for that particular position, not for the hiring manager to ‘save money’.”

Payslip 3

“One of the things that shouldn’t be normalised in Malaysia. During the interview process, the hiring manager who is knowledgeable should be able to assume the expertise and experience of a person. Pay la according to that expertise and experience, not according to past salary.”

Payslip 4

“It’s normally like this. They want to only increase 5-10% from the old salary. I’ve experienced it too. When asked to follow the real rate, they said it’s too much of an increment.”

So, what do you think? Should companies be allowed to ask for past months payslips or should they learn to value someone based on their expertise and experience and pay them accordingly?
