It’s no secret that us Malaysians love our local food, with many of us having Nasi Lemak for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

But, has our eating habits caused us to go into a downward spiral?

The Ministry of Health (KKM) recently took to their Twitter page to share how the obesity rates in Malaysia has increased significantly, with 1 out of 2 adults being overweight and obese.

Fat 1

They wrote, “Malaysian society is getting fatter! 1 out of 2 Malaysian adults are overweight and obese. The NHMS (Institute for Public Health) 2023 (National Health & Morbidity Survey) report shows the prevalence of obesity and being overweight continues to increase from 50.1% (in 2019) to 54.4% (in 2023).”

KKM went on to emphasise the health problems that can come with being overweight and urges the people to take action now before it’s too late.

“Obesity and being overweight are risk factors for diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease. Act now, obesity is not a norm,”

“Eat healthy, move actively, stay away from cigarettes and alcohol,” they added.

We genuinely hope that Malaysians reconsider their lifestyle choices that might be causing them to become overweight. After all, Nasi Lemak is great, but it is best when consumed in moderation.
