The rather interesting design of a fuel station in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan has caught the attention of Malaysians recently, with many being intrigued and amused by the location of the automated teller machine (ATM) inside the convenience store of the fuel station.

Spotted and shared online by Facebook user Tuan Aziman, the photo of the ATM has garnered over 15,000 likes and more than 1,200 shares in just under 48 hours.

ATM on an elevated pedestal?

In the photo, the ATM can be seen being located at the very end of the convenience store of the fuel station. More interestingly is the fact that the ATM was put in an elevated spot in comparison to other things in the store, with users having to climb 3 steps to be able to withdraw money.

Besides that, another interesting observation of the elevated ATM is that there’s a handrail for the staircase despite it being only 3 steps. Not only that, the handrail is also located on the left side where there’s a glass window and not on the right side where there’s nothing to stop an individual from falling to the floor.

In the caption of the post, Tuan Aziman asserted,

“Want to withdraw money feels like accepting a medal”

Malaysians are amused by the ATM’s unconventional location

In the comments section, many Malaysians expressed their amusement at the ATM’s location inside the fuel station convenience store, with some also giving out theories as to why it was designed that way.

One Malaysian joked that after withdrawing money, users must be careful and not be distracted by counting banknotes when going down the steps as they’ll likely fall on the floor.

Meanwhile, a commenter joked that while going up the steps feels like winning a medal, going down the steps will be a disappointment after you see the balance of your bank account.

Besides that, one commenter said that there should be an announcer nearby so that every time someone withdraws money, the announcer would use a speaker to announce how much money the individual has taken out of their bank account.

It may have been designed with floods in mind

On a more serious note, many Malaysians also deduced that the ATM is put in an elevated spot to protect the machine if the area gets flooded.

This may prove to be the case as Tuan Aziman revealed in one of the replies that the location of the ATM is in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, a place that has been known to be hit with floods during monsoon seasons.
