This M’sian university just got super creative and built an on-the-move prayer room!
Based on an article by Harian Metro, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Kedah made a bold, innovative move when they decided to build a portable surau (prayer room). Remodelling the inside of a bus and naming it ‘Musolla on Wheels’, the idea came about as a solution to the throngs of students that would crowd surau(s) within the university, especially at prayer hours.
“The surau(s) that we do have cannot accommodate the number of students all at once, causing some of them to go back to their dorms to pray before coming back to lecture halls. Very aware of that difficulty, Pusat Penginapan Pelajar (SAC) decided to work with Syarikat Bas Unic (university’s bus company) to make this happen”, said director of SAC, Roslina Abdullah.
According to her, the bus has been remodelled with prayer spots that can accommodate a congregation of about 15-17. It is complete with public facilities like a water tank, a wuduk pipe, air conditioning, slippers and sejadah (praying cloths). The on-the-move surau is open from 12.30pm till 6.00pm every day, however, for the time being, it is only usable for males.
Since its creation, the surau has been receiving good feedback from the students. One of them stated how it has come in very handy especially for those that have classes.
“I hope that all the students from UUM get to reap the benefits from this ‘Musolla On Wheels’ which have been provided for us, so that none of us will have to miss prayer times because of class again”, he said.
Isn’t that just a nifty idea?!
