Remember how slow the internet connectivity was back in our uni days where loading journals seemed like they were taking forever? More like 5-ever!
Well, that will soon be a thing of the past because over 150 institutions nationwide can now enjoy high-speed internet of up to 100Gbps!
Das right guys, under the newly-rebranded Malaysian Research & Education Network (MYREN-X) project, institutions such as universities, colleges, hospitals and government agencies that have subscribed to MYREN-X can enjoy a dedicated high-speed network, according to The Star.
Here’s the list of universities involved.
- Universiti Malaya (UM)
- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)
- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
- Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
- Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)
- Multimedia University (MMU)
- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)
- Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)
- Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)
- Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)
- Islamic International University Malaysia (IIUM)
- Universiti Teknikal Melaka Malaysia (UTeM)
- Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM)
- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)
- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK)

Besides universities, 31 polytechnics, 85 college communities, 5 hospitals and 6 government agencies have also subscribed to this project.
With such high-speed connectivity, scientists and researchers will be able to carry out high-impact projects at their respective institutions. Plus, it can also boost the collaboration between local and foreign scientists.
“With MYREN-X, we hope to further boost capacity to 3,200Gbps, which will really improve big-data processing and high-performance computing,” our Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Razak said.
“In medical research of cancer, it is required to have high-performance computing system that can process up to 26 billion character codes per second, with the aim of reducing the fatality rate among patients,” he added.
Let’s hope that with fast internet connectivity, more high-impact research can be done and our universities can place better in the world university rankings next year.
