A local trader had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after leaving severe injuries to his 46-year-old third wife resulting in her being in a coma 3 years ago.

Berita Harian reported that Rosmaini Abd Raof was accused of intentionally causing harm to his ex-wife Jahidah Nordin, who was pregnant at the time, by assaulting her head, face, and hands, and stomping on her back, resulting in severe injuries.

The trial went on for 3 years

Judge Fatimah Zahari gave the 10-year prison sentence after deciding the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The trial went on for 3 years and included testimonies from 11 prosecution witnesses.

Fatimah explained that after going through all the testimonies, documents, and written arguments from both sides, as well as the defence’s mitigation and the prosecution’s points, the accused was found guilty.

“That’s why the accused is sentenced to 10 years in prison, starting from today’s conviction date (December 9),” she said.

He pleaded for a lighter sentence due to his heart condition

The defence lawyer, Mohd Salleh Togimin, pleaded with the court to consider giving a lighter sentence, explaining how Rosmaini has been struggling with a heart condition.

Salleh went on to share that Rosmaini is self-employed, relying on an unstable income to make ends meet, while also bearing the responsibility of supporting 2 wives and 8 children, whose ages range from just 2 years old to 19 years old.

“Plus, he’s already spent a year and 2 months in prison, and during that time, his family had to scrape together money to bail him out,” he added.
