An animal rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) is calling for action to be taken against a Malaysian man after he was seen abusing a monkey that had been chained up. The incident allegedly took place in Kelantan.

The NGO, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM), took to its Facebook page to showcase a video that has now gone viral, as it shows the man slapping, kicking and choking the monkey, while also urging the authorities to take action against the man.

The caption reads, “SAFM has received complaints from the public regarding a video that is now going viral on social media, which shows cruelty against a monkey, believed to have taken place in Kelantan. In the video, the monkey is seen being chained, slapped several times and kicked until the animal was in pain.”

“We urge the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) to take immediate action.”

They also called for witnesses or individuals with information about this incident to come forward to assist with investigations into this matter, and reminded the general public that cruelty towards animals is against the law.

“Based on Section 86 (of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010), perpetrators can be fined up to RM100,000 or imprisoned for up to 3 years, or both,”

“SAFM will continue to monitor the development of this case and ensure that the authorities act firmly and promptly, so that justice can be served,” they added.
