An elderly man in Johor lost a total of RM445,000 after trying to help a family member who he believed to be disturbed by supernatural beings.

According to a statement, the 70-year-old retiree was tricked by an acquaintance, who claimed his family was being haunted and offered traditional healing services as a way to solve the problem.

He had to give cash and jewellery for the treatment

On April 14, Tangkak District Police Chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the victim was asked to hand over some of his assets in order to receive the so-called treatment.

According to the report, the victim gave cash and jewellery worth around RM445,000 to someone he personally knew, believing the treatment was legitimate.

“From March until earlier this month, the victim handed over money and jewellery to the suspect before realising he had been scammed. He later lodged a police report at the Tangkak Police Station yesterday,” Roslan said.

“Always verify the service to avoid falling for scams”

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. If found guilty, the suspect could face up to 10 years in prison, whipping, and a fine.

The public is reminded to stay alert and cautious when dealing with offers like these, especially those involving traditional treatments.

He also urged anyone who’s been scammed to contact the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) at 997 immediately.
