For the past few years, Malaysians have been favouring going overseas to countries like Thailand for their vacations. This could very well be due to the fact that prices of food and accommodation in Thailand is so much for affordable than in our own country.

With that being said, should hotels in Malaysia hike their prices by 10% to 30%?

The Ekonomi Rakyat Twitter page recently shared how hotels are planning on hiking their prices by 10% to 30% starting next month due to sales and service tax (SST) increasing by 2%.

They wrote, “Hotel prices are expected to rise between 10% and 30%, said the President of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), Datin Christina Toh. It follows an increase in the SST rate from 6% to 8% effective March 1 (Friday).”

Considering the fact that the price hike is coming after Malaysians have already complained about hotels and food being too expensive in Malaysia, many were not happy to hear the news especially because a 10% to 30% price hike seems unreasonable for a 2% tax increase.

“Taxes for hotels are going up by 2% and they want to increase (prices) by 10% to 30%? (The people) might as well buy tents and go camping.”

Hotel 2

“Bye bye to vacationing in Malaysia. Everyone is going to go to Hatyai after this. Let them feel it. Go ahead and keep increasing prices.”

Hotel 3

“Taxes are going up by 2% but they’re increasing prices to 10% to 30%.”

Hotel 4

“Things are getting more expensive. Just vacation in our backyards lah. Or buy a caravan as a solution.”

What do you think of the potential hotel price hikes that are heading our way?
