The government has launched the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35) to encourage the Bumiputera community to play a more significant role in the socio-economic development of the country.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the implementation of PuTERA35 needs to be monitored more closely so that it succeeds in uplifting Bumiputeras within 10 years without marginalising other races.
“PuTERA35 needs to be monitored, we want to plan but it is the responsibility of the people from government agencies, government companies, departments and ministries to make it happen. We will monitor closely and want this plan to be successful in order to dignify the Bumiputera people and the Malaysian people,” he said.
The Edge also shared that the goal of PuTERA35 is to have 70% of Bumiputeras occupy the country’s high-skilled jobs as compared to 61% in 2022, as well as raise Bumiputera equity ownership to 30% from 18.4% in 2020.
Additionally, he wants the implementation of PuTERA35 to be done carefully, efficiently and responsibly.
“If not, even if we pour tens of billions of Ringgit into this, it will still drip and leak and the effect will not reach the grassroots level, causing the youth and the people to feel restless because although it sounds great and the plan is amazing, the implementation is going nowhere,”
“In the planning stages, before we proceed to the implementation stages, who will be the ones implementing it? Definitely a Bumiputera agency. Then, they must ensure that the implementation process is more thorough, more efficient and more responsible,” he explained.
With the theme, Participation, Ownership and Governance (3P), PuTERA35 will emphasise the importance of all aspects of development, including for the Bumiputeras of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as the Orang Asli people, to guarantee a foundation of survival, integrity in the distribution of wealth, equality and social justice.
PuTERA35 has 3 structural cores which are for socioeconomic ability, integrity of governance and institutions, and social justice. Additionally, there are 12 drives and 132 efforts set in place surrounding these 3 structural cores.
Taking into account trends that are expected to affect the world and society in the future, this transformation plan was developed to open up space and opportunities for the Bumiputera community to take advantage of sectors and industries driven by the needs of high-growth high-value industries (HGHV) and based on advanced technology.
