Most florists would be having a busy day today (Valentine’s Day) as they do their level best to fulfill the influx of flower and bouquet orders.

But there’s one florist in Kuala Lumpur that has chosen to close their shop for Valentine’s Day, and trust us, it’s for good reasons!

Nook Flowers took to their Instagram page to announce their closure for Valentine’s Day, from February 10 (Saturday) to February 18 (Sunday), due to the surge of flower prices during the lovey-dovey seasons, as well as the environmental impacts of flying in flowers from overseas to meet the high number of orders.

They wrote, “Hello, Nooklets. For the third year in a row, we’re sticking to our decision to not participate in Valentine’s Day.”

Here are their reasons:

  • Flower prices are high, and will get higher leading to Valentine’s week.

“While we send thoughts to the Powers of the Universe every blooming day to stabilise costs, the Gods’ of the currency exchange rate have yet to hear us. With the massive increase in demand for Valentine’s Day, there will be a further surge and this state of flux will continue.”

“We’ve not made it a secret that, over the past years, we’ve been absorbing a fair bit of the difference so as not to pass the cost on to our clients who buy from us all year round for all manner of life events, but this is not a viable option for us in peak seasons,” they shared.

  • There’s an over reliance on imported stock – as a result their ethos of Responsible Floristry and supporting ‘Grown Not Flown’ is heavily compromised.

“Carbon footprint is the stuff of our nightmares and keeps us awake at night; blinking in the dark like owls gives us crow’s feet, nobody wants that.”

“We pride ourselves in offering as much ‘Grown Not Flown’ options as we can manage daily, but there’s still a shortage in the local floriculture industry (stemming from a few years ago when local flower farms took quite a beating with the prolonged Covid-19 shut downs, and many switched to growing vegetables),” they added.

Nook Flowers went on to explain that showing your partner love shouldn’t only be limited to Valentine’s Day!

“Also, like we loudly say every year, there are no rules – so celebrate love in small ways every day and often. To be clear, we arrived at this decision after careful planning and consideration of what best serves the growth needs of our small, family business while keeping true to our ethos of Responsible Floristry.”

“It’s a personal decision and we do not speak for others in our industry. Please remember that Valentine’s Day is an important event for many hardworking people in our industry who strive to make this a memorable day for consumers,” they said.

Honestly, any initiative that is meant to conserve the planet, such as their ‘Grown Not Flown’ policy, is a winner in our books.

Kudos, Nook Flowers!
