Our kidneys are one of the most vital organs of the human body and having kidney failure could prove catastrophic for our health!

Kidney failure is a serious health issue that’s always been overlooked by Malaysians, so this Penang Doctor has taken to social media to educate the public on the severity as well as the early symptoms of the disease.

In a Facebook post that has garnered more than 780 shares, Dr Abdul Rahim from Bayan Lepas, Penang explained that our kidneys function as a set of organs that filter all the toxins from our blood circulatory system through the urine we excrete when we pee.

He further explains that when our kidneys malfunction and lose the ability to filter the harmful toxins from our blood, it could lead to your health deteriorating significantly. So much so that if you do not go for dialysis after your kidney shutdowns, you’ll likely to die within 6 months!

Dr Abdul Rahim shares ten early signs of kidney failure to look out for before its too late.

1. You always have the urge to pee, but the volume of the urine is very minimal

This happens when the filtering process within the organ deteriorates. Hence more bodily fluid is left unfiltered, meaning a constant urge to go to the bathroom.

2. Having bruises around your eyes

The bruises can happen because of the loss of proteins that were supposed to be stored in your blood but were filtered out by malfunctioning kidneys.

3. Having bruises around your ankles and leg.

If you have bruises around these areas or if the skin around the area takes a long time to go back to normal after pressing, it may mean that you have lost a lot of protein and sodium due to your kidneys failing.

4. Having red-ish urine when you pee

If you notice this happening, it may be due to your urine having blood in them due to leakage.

5. Your urine is very cloudy and foamy

When this happens, it signifies that proteins have leaked into your urine due to your kidneys not working as they should.

6. Having dry and itchy skin

This might happen when our kidneys are no longer able to balance the levels of minerals, water, and nutrients within our blood which significantly affects the health of our skin.

7. Your muscles easily suffer from cramp

This could happen when your calcium and phosphorus levels are low due to a malfunctioning kidney.

8. Always feeling weak, restless and tired for no apparent reason

This might happen when the toxins build up in your blood at an alarming level. A failed kidney means your red blood cell levels are low which causes anaemia.

9. Having trouble going to sleep

A malfunctioning kidney will make trap toxins in your body in your system, hence the lack of ability to sleep.

10. Loss of appetite

Due to the excessive amount of toxins in your blood due to kidney failure, your body will reject food, hence the loss of appetite.

Besides that, Dr Abdul Rahim also explains that you will have a higher risk of kidney disease if you:

  • Have high blood pressure.
  • Suffer from diabetes.
  • Have a family history of kidney failure.
  • Are older than 60 years old.

He further reminds the public that you need to go for a kidney checkup at least once per year. It’s safe to say that if you have any of the above symptoms, you better make an appointment with your local doctor ASAP!
