There are many ways one can show how much they love Malaysia, especially during sporting events – with Ultras Malaya and supporters in the many sports Malaysians excel in.
Recently, one lone supporter caught the attention of social media, when he belted the Saya Anak Malaysia song during Tan Kian Meng/Tan Wee Kiong’s match at the All England Open Badminton Championship.
Sang by Malaysian student Chan Wei Hoong, a video of his voice echoing in the stadium was uploaded by netizen @theone_xyz.
In his tweet, the netizen writes, “my favourite moment from yesterday’s match was from whoever sang ‘Saya Anak Malaysia’ during Tan Kian Meng/Tan Wee Kiong’s match.”
“Thank you! Saya terhibur.”
Sharing that this chant should be added to the list that includes ‘Malaysia Boleh’, the netizen identified the person behind the scene is a Malaysian student by the name of @DarenceChan.
“I was at the All England today. My chant was all about making the Birmingham Arena as loud as it can be.”
He shared that he too had a fan moment the very next day.
“I visited the players’ hotel this morning. I saw Thinaah, Hoo Pang Ron, Cheah Yee See, Ong/Teo and told them, I was singing for them, passionately yesterday, that they could literally hear me.”
“After their matches, they would instantly come and see me after the game.”
“They’d greet and do whatever I want them to do (not literally).”
Let’s hope that this student’s actions will inspire more to show love for Malaysians competing overseas, and cheer our athletes on!
