Ever imagined a school with more than 10 storeys? What if we tell you that DBKL is considering building a school with up to 17 levels?

In Parliament recently, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Zaliha Mustafa said that new concept schools consisting of between 10 and 17 floors around the city are among the alternatives to optimise land space.

“This school concept is widely used in Australia, which is also equipped with sports fields and recreational areas.”

“The land in KL is very limited and the soaring prices are a challenge for us. So, DBKL will discuss with the Ministry of Education later to refine the concept of the construction.”

Zaliha said the Federal Territories Department (JWP) has identified 139 sites with an area of 1,228.95 hectares for the construction of projects that will be carried out through redevelopment in the future.

The development would be carried out in line with the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (PSKL2040) and the Draft Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (DPTKL2040).

Netizens weighed in on the matter

Many Malaysians did not think it was a wise idea to build high-rise school buildings in Kuala Lumpur.

“There are so many empty buildings in KL. Turn them into schools instead of leaving them haunted.”

“Dear DBKL, please think wisely. There are more cons than pros.”

“Sounds like a low-cost flat to me. 10 floors but only 2 elevators. 1 spoils and it will take 3-4 months to fix. And then, you’ll blame the students for being late.”

“Does the high-rise school come with an elevator or escalator? The lesson might end before the teachers even make it to the classroom.”

“Since you’re optimising limited land, might as well build a 100-story school.”

“There is a lot to consider, especially the maintenance fees. Think wisely, research more so you can plan better with effective outcomes for the government and the students.”

Residents of KL, what do you think of DBKL’s plan?
