From having his tweets removed for spreading false Covid cures to now this, the chairman of MDEC just can’t seem to catch a break.

Yesterday, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chairman, Datuk Dr Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff, was the new hot topic on Twitter once again after he shared a tweet asking people to stop shopping online and to #sapotlokal instead.

“Received from one of my WhatsApp groups. Do help the local small businesses if you can,” he writes in his Tweet.

Yes, you read that right: the chairman of MDEC just told us to stop buying from e-commerce platforms. Needless to say, netizens had a field day with the pure comical hypocrisy of the whole situation.

Many started questioning whether Dr Rais Hussin even knew what his job was about, commenting on how the chairman of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation asking people to stop buying online is counterintuitive to what his agency is aiming to do.

Others also pointed out that the e-commerce platforms mentioned in his WhatsApp chain message were actually just online platforms where many local stores are located. So is asking people to shop less online actually supporting small, local businesses? Or is it just taking away another form of their income?

Meanwhile, online shops and small businesses alike also took the chance to self-promo under his tweet. And unsurprisingly, many of them sell their items on the very e-commerce platforms Dr Rais Hussin was asking people to buy less from in his tweet.
