A few weeks ago, a massive flood swept through Kuala Lumpur due to the heavy rain, leaving many cars stranded in the middle of the road while some houses had to suffer damage from the water. This raised concerns on the drainage system in the Klang Valley and how people are disposing of rubbish improperly.

Not only are small items being littered on the roads which eventually enters the drains, but huge and bulky items are also being disposed of in drains.

Recently, MBPP (Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang) shared how they have been working hard to clean drains and ditches in preparation for the rainy season. However, it was disappointing when they discovered that there are some people who are not disposing of their trash in the allocated places.

Besides having to clear out large empty plastic water bottles, members of MBPP found a whole mattress thrown into the drain!

Several photos posted on the Facebook page, Penang Kini shows an old mattress rolled and tied up lying inside a drain. If flash floods were to occur during a downpour, the mattress would definitely be an obstruction and will cause clogging in the drain.

Thankfully, MBPP was there to clear the drain, but nevertheless, this cannot be a common occurrence. The mentality of individuals living in Malaysia needs to change if we want to move forward as a country. A simple act like throwing your own rubbish into a proper bin can greatly improve the image of Malaysia.

Let’s work together to make Malaysia a clean and safe place!
