It’s the holiday season now and people are taking the chance to travel, so naturally, you will find tourist hotspots full of people if you visit there during this time. One of these favourite places is none other than Penang, which is where many Malaysians and international tourists like to visit when they’re in the mood for good food and some sights outside the city.

If you are travelling to Penang by car or motorbike then you will inevitably end up on the Penang bridge which links the mainland and the island. It’s also the fifth-longest in Southeast Asia so naturally, many people will be excited to cross this bridge. In fact, you can see many people posting on their Instagram Stories as they pass through the bridge – but make sure that you do it in a safe way!

Recently, a Facebook page, Penang Kini, posted a photo of a group of mat rempits doing some dangerous acts on the Penang bridge and endangering not only themselves but others as well. The photo shows them stopping at the side of the Penang bridge and having what looks like a mini gathering. Some of them can be seen standing on the railing as well, which is highly dangerous. What if they fell off?

It is, in fact, illegal to stop on the Penang bridge at all unless it’s for emergencies. There are plenty of signages warning road users that they are not allowed to stop on the bridge especially for sightseeing or for taking photos. PLUS has also informed of this before when there were previous incidents of groups of people stopping to take photos.

Netizens were criticising the mat rempits, saying that it was very dangerous and if any of them fell off then they would cause trouble for police officers and firefighters who need to come and rescue them. However, some of them defended the mat rempits and said that things like this only happen once in a while.
