This is such an appalling case!

A man from Shanghai was sentenced to death by the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court on Wednesday (Aug 22) for killing his wife and hiding her body in a freezer for three months, as reported by China Daily.

Zhu Xiaodong, 31, was convicted of strangling his wife Yang Liping to death during a heated argument in October 2016, at their home in Shanghai.

After killing Yang, Zhu wrapped her body in a quilt and hid it in a freezer on the balcony of their home for 105 days, Daily Mail reported.

According to the court, during the three-month period, Zhu had impersonated as his wife on her social networking accounts and replied to text messages from her family and friends. He also spent his wife’s money lavishly to travel and date other women.

“He spent lavishly without restraint and showed no signs of remorse,” the court stated.

Zhu eventually turned himself in on Feb 1, 2017, after he realised he could no longer hide the truth as the couple were expected to attend his father-in-law’s birthday celebration that evening. It was reported that Zhu had attempted to commit suicide the day before he surrendered to the police, as stated in South China Morning Post.

The gruesome murder has shocked the public in China, where Yang’s family had publicly pushed for the death sentence.

The victim’s father, Yang Ganlian, told reporters outside the court that although the family is satisfied with the court’s decision, they are still struggling to accept his daughter’s fate.

“We can’t say we are happy, but we are comforted. My wife has had a bit of a meltdown – she has been suppressing her feelings for a long time.”

“I would like to thank our lawyers, the media, net users and everyone who supported us.”

“I am going to head to my daughter’s grave and tell her the result,” he added.

Zhu now has 10 days to appeal against the sentence.

We just hope that the victim’s family would be able to seek justice for Yang and find peace to move on from this traumatising incident.
