It’s day nine of the Movement Control Order and with an extension being announced till the 14th of April, Malaysians will see themselves being confined to their houses for a longer period.

When the MCO was first announced, we saw a different shade of Malaysians, those who resorted to panic hoarding. Yes, those who thought it was okay to buy ten rolls of toilet paper and hoard masks as well. This move not only is irrational but also extremely selfish as you’re depriving other people of their basic supplies.

What’s worse, some people even proceeded to upsell those products!

A post was sent to the Facebook group, The MAKAN Club where a Gardenia small loaf is being sold at a price of RM500! That’s a 20,000% price increase from its usual price of RM2.50.

“Imagine an elderly or OKU person who needs it more than them. Spare a heart and don’t buy more than what you really need!”

However, there are some Malaysians who took this opportunity to make jokes on Carousell as to how Gardenia bread is so hard to get now.

The post even detailed how the condition is 9/10 as its “casing” is still nice!

One commentor added: “Too much free time at home and got nothing to do I think. So they are resorting to trolling.”

In a statement from Tang Siew Wai, Country Head (Malaysia) of Carousell Malaysia, he shared to WORLD OF BUZZ,

“While Carousell doesn’t regulate prices for buying and selling, we are stepping in to make sure that our platform is not being abused to take advantage of the public health situation. Panic-buying and hoarding will exacerbate the situation, and we would like our community to look out for each other, and buy and sell responsibly.

“We advise our users to abide by our community guidelines, and encourage our community to help one another and report any abuse of mispriced listings. Carousell is working closely with relevant regulatory and enforcement agencies to review listings if needed. Listings with unreasonable pricing will be asked to observe correction action or will be taken down.”

Whether it’s a joke or not, we do not condone to resorting to upselling products in times of crisis.

Let’s remember that now isn’t the time for us to be selfish and most of all, greedy. Let’s just buy what we need and leave the rest for those who need it more. To those who still have a sense of humour now, y’all are making the MCO easier for a lot of us.
