We understand that in any given moment, undergraduates would love to squeeze in a car and go on road trips with their friends. But sadly, lectures and tight deadlines for assignments seem to always get in the way.

Well, not anymore because the Higher Education Ministry will be implementing Gap Year 2017 Programme starting from this September. Under this programme, undergrads are allowed to take a year off their studies to pursue their interests, NST reported.

Yes, a whole friggin’ year!

“These students can take a year off to gain industrial work experience or pursue their interest in arts. The universities can also make it as their programme. It can be a part of the National Service Training Programme,” said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

Moreover, undergrads can also opt to become volunteers for organisations, work for private sectors, or even travel the worldRoad trip alert!

This practice is common among universities abroad such as in European countries and America. And we’re glad it’s now being implemented here!

Idris said that among the universities that would participate in this program are Universiti Utara Malaysia , Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaya. Take note yea guys.

However, more universities are expected to take part in this programme. Guys, you better start praying for your university to take part. Think of all the travelling or soul searching you can do in that 1 year!

As for students of which year that they could apply for the programme, the ministry will leave the decision to the university’s authority. Tentatively, only students that have completed minimum 1 year of course structure are allowed to apply for the programme, Sinchew reported.

Most applauded this programme as it can brush up a student’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and allows undergrads to obtain real-world experience in various field of studies. Not to mention take some time off to do what your heart is telling you to do. Soul searching anyone?

So, what are you guys waiting for? Start making road-trip plans with your friends now! Who knows, you might just find your passion along the way!
