With this MCO, people who earn a daily wage suffered as they had no source of income and they were not allowed to work. Some of them borrowed money from their friends/relatives while others tried their best to make the ends meet.

Since PM Muhyiddin has announced that the MCO will be loosened up a little on 4th March, many businesses and economic sectors are back in business. One of the businesses that are allowed to open are pawnshops, and of course, they will need to follow certain guidelines and SOPs.

Today (4th May), viral images surfaced online and we see tons of pictures of people queuing up outside of pawnshops on our social media feed. It was not only at one pawn shop but it was at several similar establishments in different states in Malaysia.

It is unclear whether the people were there to pawn off their stuff or to pay back their loan. However, most of the captions to these posts say that those who were struggling during the MCO are now pawning their jewellery/possessions so that they can survive these troubling times. If that’s the case then it is truly disheartening.
