If you have been keeping up with the trends on social media these days, you would have come across people posting videos with special effects and music. The app started gaining popularity in China and they are also already widely used all over the world, including Malaysia. However, if you are part of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) then do be careful when you are using Tik Tok because the Ministry of Defence recently came out with a warning to its staff.

On their Facebook page, they posted a reminder asking their military staff not to abuse Tik Tok especially when they’re dressed in uniform. Apparently, the Cyber Defense Operation Center (CDOC) noticed that many MAF personnel were using the video app, which was affecting the image of the force.

They said, “MAF personnel should be mindful of the MAF Guidelines for Using Social Media and always adhere to it whenever they are uploading content to social media. Amongst some of these criteria for social media postings include not affecting the image of MAF, not humiliating any individuals or groups whether intentionally or not, and not uploading any images that show that you are part of the military.”

“CDOC would like to remind MAF personnel that they are not allowed to upload any videos of themselves or any colleagues using the Tik Tok app when they are in uniform. You are not an artiste or any cheap publicity material! Stop embarrassing yourself and MAF,” the notice stated.

A quick check on social media proved that there were several videos of the military in Malaysia clad in uniform and goofing around in front of the camera using the Tik Tok app. However, there were also personnel from other uniformed bodies who made videos while they were wearing their uniforms as well.

Netizens who saw the warning agreed with the reasons given by the Ministry of Defence and said that the people in MAF should always be mindful of how they behave as it would be a reflection of the MAF image and reputation, especially when they’re in their uniforms.

What do you think of the warning?
