There are many situations that can cause itchiness to our eyes, and a few drops of Eye Mo will usually solve the problem most of the time. However, for this particular woman, it’s not that simple.
For the past two years, a woman named Xu from Hubei, China has been experiencing itchiness and redness in her eyes. Despite the prolonged symptoms, she didn’t seek any medical advice and only relied on eye drops to remedy the condition.
Then, two weeks ago, she told her family that her eyes have become extremely dry and the rheum has increased. Also, her eyelashes began sticking onto each other.
Noticing that something was amiss, Xu was sent to the hospital by her family to receive proper treatment. That was when the doctor discovered that there was a huge quantity of eyelash mites residing in Xu’s lash follicles.
Although it’s not a life-threatening condition, it’s a problem that needs to be addressed, for obvious reasons.
So the doctor used a microscope to get a closer look at her eyelashes and was instantly taken aback. In just a single hair follicle, the doctor discovered more than 10 mites! Therefore, it was estimated that there must be over 100 mites residing in her eyelashes. For two years, can you believe it?
In the end, she was diagnosed with conjunctivitis and blepharitis, a condition where the eyelids are inflamed due to bacterial infection caused by the mite’s discharge.
Thankfully, after receiving the treatment, her condition improved and she has now fully recovered.
The doctor said Xu’s case was probably caused by the lack of air circulation in her room and attention to personal hygiene.
In fact, it was reportedly a good four or five years ago since the last time she changed her pillow case. So the doctor suspected that the mites may have ‘migrated’ from the pillow to her eyelashes.
Hence, here are a few recommendations by the doctor on ways to prevent contracting these nasty eyelash mites.
- Make sure your living environment is clean
- Frequently change your bed sheet and pillow case, and dry them under the sun
- Immediately wash your hands after touching your pet dogs or cats
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m changing my pillow case tonight.
