Jobstreet Survey Reveals 1 in 5 Malaysians Lost Their Jobs During MCO

While we all knew the unemployment rate would rise due to the pandemic, this statistic is still incredibly worrying.

In May, JobStreet conducted a survey among 5,000 members of the Malaysian workforce and discovered that 1 in 5 Malaysians who were employed before MCO began was now out of a job. The retrenched workers mostly consist of workers from:

  • Tourism/travel
  • Hospitality
  • Mass transportation
  • Education
  • Retail industries

54% of those who are currently retrenched are actively searching and applying for jobs, with there being more than 74 million job searches on Google in March alone.

But that’s not all that’s worrying. The survey also showed that 35% of Malaysians have experienced a cut in their salaries of more than 30% during the MCO.

Since most of those who are unemployed are looking for jobs that will enable them to start as soon as possible, JobStreet is adding a new function on their site called, ‘Work Now’. It’s designed to “help job seekers stand out” by informing potential employers that they are ready to start work immediately.

All you have to do to activate this function is:

  • Log into your JobStreet profile
  • Click “Update My Profile”
  • Click “Additional Info”
  • Click the pencil icon next to “Additional Info” to access “Other Information”
  • Type in the hashtag, #WorkNow under “Other Information”
  • Don’t forget to click “Save” so the function can be seen when employers click into your profile
