A Malaysian influencer recently revealed that she spent a large amount of money to buy followers.

While many public figures rely on organic engagement and followers (those who follow you willingly without being paid), Syaniena Natasya, on the other hand, admitted that she is among the influencers who forked out money to buy followers, in response to a netizen’s question.

In her TikTok post @syanienanatasyaaa, Syaniena said she paid RM20,000 to buy followers. Her followers increased from 40,000 to over 500,000 after paying the money and currently, Syaniena has over 697,000 followers on Instagram.

“I’m doing this for work”

Syaniena, who is also an entrepreneur who runs her cosmetic business said she had to do so for business purposes.

“In this line of work, I have to get followers. Some buyers and manufacturers care about your number of followers on social media, including if you have that bluetick next to your social media handle,” Syaniena explained.

Syaniena also said that paying to buy followers is nothing new on social media and in her line of work but unlike others, she believes there is nothing for her to hide.

“It’s illogical that my followers went up from 40,000 to over 500,000 suddenly without paying. Do you think people like me that much? Do you think I’m Jennifer Lopez?”

She also said that she chose to be upfront about the matter because she wanted to live in the real world, and not a “fantasy world that is full of lies.”

“I don’t know how to lie. Whatever I do and say, I’m honest about them.”

What do you think about paying for followers? Would you rely solely on organic engagement or would you rather spend some money to boost your profile?
