Indonesia made headlines worldwide last year after the country banned the sales of the iPhone 16 Series and other Apple products until the tech giant invested in the Republic and fulfilled the local content requirement certification, known as TKDN.

The iPhone 16 Series was finally officially available in Indonesia on 11 April 2024, some 7 months after its release in other countries such as Malaysia. This is after Apple had reportedly agreed to commit a USD1 billion investment in the country, including setting up new plants in Bandung and Batam, as well as training locals in the research and development of products.

Apple iPhone 17 Series passes TKDN requirements, will be available in Indonesia soon

Accordingly, with Apple’s recent release of the iPhone 17 Series, all eyes are now on whether the successor will face the same troubles in Indonesia as the iPhone 16 Series.

Well, good news for Apple fans in the Republic, as the company’s latest smartphones have passed the local requirements set by Indonesia’s Industry Ministry.

According to the Indonesia-based portal Kompas, the latest batch of iPhones, namely the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, have all passed the TKDN requirement set by the country’s Industry Ministry.

Specifically, all 4 variants of the iPhone 17 Series were spotted on the official TKDN database with 40% scores.

For context, TKDN or Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri is the requirement for products to have a percentage of components being manufactured in Indonesia. For smartphones, the TKDN percentage needed is a minimum of 40%, which means that the iPhone 17 Series just barely passed the certification.

With the green light from the Industry Ministry, the iPhone 17 Series is expected to be officially sold in Indonesia in early October 2025.

However, despite publishing the 40% figure, the database didn’t specify what percentage of locally manufactured components are used in the iPhone 17 Series that will be sold in the country.

Most recently, the Indonesian Government announced changes to the TKDN requirement, with companies that have investments in the country automatically getting a 25% TKDN score.

So, what are your thoughts on the iPhone 17 Series having a 40% TKDN score in Indonesia? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
