The tendency to become a keyboard warrior comes with a price, especially if you’re not alert about the things you say online.
34-year-old Chiok Wai Loong was sentenced to 6 months of jail time by the Sessions Court yesterday (March 21) for his insensitive remarks about the recent Allah socks issue in KK Mart. Loong admitted that he was merely a keyboard warrior and had no idea his remarks were serious and hurtful, reported Sinar Harian.
“I’m Chinese, we have tattoos of Gods all over our body, so I thought the ‘Allah socks’ issue was something small,” Loong told the court.
Loong was also fined RM12,000 and is made per Paragraph 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and can be punished under subsection 233(3) of the same act. He made insensitive remarks about the matter via his Facebook account.
During the proceedings, the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Datin Kalmizah Salleh suggested that the accused should be given a heavy sentence to serve as a lesson to the community.
“A total of 24 police reports were made by the public in relation to this issue, which shows the seriousness of the messages made that are sensitive to Muslims.”
Last Saturday, the top management of KK Mart expressed their regret over the incident of selling socks with the word ALLAH written on them.
