It is no secret that we Malaysians love our food. So much so that 1 in 2 Malaysians are obese and overweight. Similarly, those in our public service also share the same struggles, as up to 3% of cops are apparently obese.

To promote healthy living amongst cops, the Home Ministry recently announced that policemen who have been promoted must maintain a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28 to 30 for the promotion to be confirmed.

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the BMI requirement will be a part of the confirmation process for promotions in the force.

He said this move aims to uphold the discipline and fitness of the force.

“As Police Force Commission chairman, I understand the background of the fitness issue within the police force, the largest law enforcement agency in the country.”

“Physical fitness is not just a reflection of strength but also a testament to the discipline required of every officer,” he said at a press conference after visiting the preparation of the Asia International Security Summit and Expo (AISSE).
