An earthquake struck Cebu province in the Philippines on 30 September, killing at least 69 people and injuring more than 150 others.

According to BBC News, the Cebu provincial government has declared a ‘state of calamity’ and is rushing to deliver aid to affected areas, while the military has deployed army and air force units to help with relief efforts.

Luke, the heroic dog

A four-year-old dog named Luke has captured hearts online after bravely protecting his family during the powerful earthquake.

According to the rescue group Hope for Strays, Luke positioned himself between his owners and falling debris as their home collapsed during the 6.9 magnitude quake, shielding them from serious harm, as reported by Cebu Daily News.

While the family only suffered minor injuries, Luke took the full impact as his lower body was crushed under the rubble, leaving him unable to walk when rescuers found him two days later.

Luke’s owners are appealing for donations

Luke was later brought to a veterinary clinic in Danao City, northern Cebu, arriving around 1 AM, where he immediately received medical care.

As of Sunday (5 October), veterinarians confirmed that Luke is responsive and still has a healthy appetite despite his condition.

Early findings showed that while he’s able to stand, veterinarians are concerned about possible nerve damage in his pelvic area. He remains under close observation and has undergone initial tests, including X-rays, to determine the extent of his injuries.

Luke’s owner and several animal rescue groups are appealing for donations to help cover his medical expenses, estimated at around PHP12,000 (~RM870).
