When the going gets tough, we can always turn to our trusted friends and seek help. Certain friendships dive even deeper when the friends are willing to risk their own life just to help out one another. A boy in Johor had put his life on the line to save his friend who was drowning.
In a fishing trip gone wrong, Muhamad Afiq Hakimi Abdul Kodi, aged 12, was found dead after saving his friend’s life. Harian Metro had reported that Afiq and his friends went to a nearby river, Sungai Tebrau, to fish and a few of his friends were taking a dip in the river. Panic had sent the group into a frenzy when one of their friends who was taking a dip started to drown.
Upon seeing his friend fighting between life and death, Afiq had jumped into the dangerous waters in an attempt to rescue him. According to the Operations Leader of the Tebrau Firefighters (BBP), Saiful Bahri Safar, Afiq had successfully rescued his friend. But, a whirlpool had pulled Afiq in, causing him to drown.
The rescue team had received a call at 3.38pm, prompting 15 firefighters and a state of the art machinery from BBP Tebrau to aid in the rescue mission. Saiful stated that the firefighters had used a specific technique that could help find victims who were drowned in deep waters. The river was estimated to be 3 metres deep when the body was found.
“The victim’s death was confirmed by paramedics before the body was surrendered to the police. Post-mortem will be done at Hospital Kulai,” said Saiful.
All thoughts and prayers go to Afiq’s family and friends.
