Have you ever wondered what all those abbreviations mean when it comes to area codes in the Selangor area? PJS? PJU? SS? USJ?
Well, we did. So we did this list because, hey, why not right!?
1. PJS
Abbreviation for: Petaling Jaya Selatan (PJ South)
Source: Wikipedia
Before Petaling Jaya became its own municipality in 1977, PJ was actually a part of Kuala Lumpur. Due to overcrowding however, PJ was then established!
While you might think that PJS only refers to the specific areas that carry the PJS acronym to the south of Petaling Jaya, PJS actually covers Seksyen 1-8, part of PJS 7, PJS 8 and PJS10. It was here that the first settlements of Petaling Jaya were located, hence the name, PJ Old Town. Mind=blown.
Fun Fact: The rest of PJS 7 and PJS 9 are now under the jurisdiction of Subang Jaya.
2. PJU
Abbreviation for: Petaling Jaya Utara (PJ North)

As Petaling Jaya continued to develop, the other side of the Federal Highway started to also be developed to accommodate the growing population. This led to the development of PJU, which encapsulates a large chunk of the Petaling Jaya district.
3. SS
Abbreviation for: Sungei Way-Subang
No, SS is in fact NOT an abbreviation for the term “Seksyen” or “Sub-Section”. Shocking, right??
Since Petaling Jaya continued to grow with more people moving into the district from other rural areas, it expanded and started developing land along Sungei Way to Subang. Hence the acronym, SS!
4. USJ
Abbreviation for: UEP Subang Jaya aka United Estates Projects Subang Jaya
After the completion of Subang Jaya (SS 12-19), UEP (United Estates Projects Berhad) started the development of new land in the Subang Jaya area. This came under the then-new Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

Fun Fact: UEP was eventually bought over by Sime Darby, which is why Sime Darby is so prominent in the Subang Jaya area. Anyone else born in SJMC?
