The Federal Territory has recorded the highest percentage of people suffering from depression and anxiety in the country.
The Minister of Health, Dr. Zaliha Mustafa shared that these findings were obtained through a study conducted by taking the views of 336,900 respondents from all over Malaysia.
Sharing during yesterday’s (March 8) Dewan Rakyat session, this comes after Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan had asked about which state had recorded the highest number of depressed individuals in our country.
“The Ministry of Health (KKM) has taken various steps to overcome mental health problems, especially for target groups including children, teenagers, young adult and the elderly.”
“Most of the mental health problems faced by young people, including teenagers and young adults, are influenced by social factors such as financial problems, relationship problems, bullying, risky behaviour of substance abuse, low self-esteem and a high sense of self-care which can lead to stress, anxiety and depression,” she shared.
With that, she explained that the Ministry conducted a survey last year.
“We conducted an overall screening in 2022 by taking 336,900 respondents and in the results we found that the highest state with depression and anxiety is in the Federal Territory.”
“So the people of this region have many problems and one of the causes of those problems is because of the high cost of living, there are also many B40s, urban poor and relationship problems between parents, peers and friends,” she added.
We genuinely hope that the government not only implement steps to help Malaysians cope through their mental health issues but also to overcome issues causing these mental health problems.
