The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has claimed that Malaysia will only be ‘fully independent’ if the party forms the Federal Government and accordingly, urges party members to help PAS win seats in the upcoming Sabah State Election.

During his speech at the PAS Sabah 2024 convention yesterday (31 August), an excerpt of which was posted on Abdul Hadi’s Facebook page, the PAS President said that he envisioned a bright future for the party in Sabah as many of the convention attendees were youth.

The Marang Member of Parliament (MP) added that there have been interesting developments recently in the political landscape, whereby during the 15th General Election (GE15), many UMNO supporters and the youth voted for PAS that the party formed the State Government at 4 states.

However, in order to form the Federal Government, Abdul Hadi stressed that the party must win in Sabah.

For context, PAS has never won a seat in the East Malaysian territory, with its sole assemblyperson in Sabah currently, Aliakbar, didn’t get the position through the State Election, but rather was appointed to it by the Sabah Government in 2020.

Accordingly, the PAS President urged for the party’s position in Sabah to be strengthened by winning a seat in the territory.

Abdul Hadi further asserted that PAS must form the Federal Government to make Malaysia fully independent without needing to depend on “foreign beings”.

The PAS President asserted,

“Whether it’s our seat or we invite our friends from other political parties to form the government with us to make our country fully Merdeka without the need to depend on foreign beings.

“We have the chance to pick the government every 5 years. Give PAS a chance to lead the government.”
