We always hear people say, “Don’t drink and drive” as a precaution to drivers because serious accidents can take place when drivers are under the influence of alcohol. This can cause serious consequences not only for themselves but for other people on the road as well.
Recently, a 34-year-old woman tragically lost control of her car while under the influence of alcohol. She was driving a Toyota Vios when she went into the opposite lane and caused a massive accident at 1.15am yesterday (July 8).
This had caused the death of four men, including a teenager, and had injured two others in the four-vehicle accident at Jalan Chong Thien Voon, Tawau reported NST.
The driver had collided with a Toyota Hiace, a Perodua Bezza and a Perodua Myvi, which then rammed into several other people who were sitting at the parking area of the BDC Commercial Centre.
Those who died were Hiew Nyuk Wei, 30; Clawrence Wong Vun Kit, 21; Dicson Lim Kien Shing, 16 and Chong Wei Chan, 21.
However, the drunk woman only suffered minor injuries while another victim, Chin Guan Xiong, 21, had his leg broken.
They were treated at Tawau Hospital where the bodies were also sent for post-mortem.
Fadil Marsus, district police chief Assistant Commissioner confirmed that the accident was caused by the intoxicated driver who lost control of her car.
“The driver will be remanded for further investigation under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987 (for driving under the influence of alcohol),” he said.
“The incident was believed to have occurred when the woman, who also sustained injuries, was heading to Jalan Tiku from Tawau town, but lost control of her car upon reaching Jalan Chong Thien Vun after the Kubota roundabout. ”
“Her car skidded into the opposite direction, ramming the three vehicles and several people there,” he said, according to The Star.
