A syndicate involved in forging documents for late birth registrations is reportedly charging between RM8,000 and RM10,000 for each processed birth certificate issued by the National Registration Department (NRD).
The cost escalates significantly when these birth certificates are sold on the black market to those in need.
A source informed Berita Harian that the scam was uncovered following an initial investigation after the NRD and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) dismantled the syndicate earlier this week.
Investigations revealed that the syndicate’s applications for birth certificates were not based on actual births. Instead, they prepared the certificates in advance and sold them to specific individuals.
The syndicate used deceptive tactics by submitting all necessary documents to the NRD to obtain valid birth certificates. These documents included the LM01 birth verification form signed by a doctor, the mother’s health record book (pink book), and the identification card of either parent.
NRD staff processed these birth certificates without suspicion, as all required information was provided. However, the details were false, as the births did not occur at the claimed clinics or maternity centers.
Once issued, these valid birth certificates were sold for RM8,000 to RM10,000 and could fetch much higher prices on the black market. If sold together with a baby, the price could reach hundreds of thousands of ringgit.
