A foreign man’s attempt to trick immigration officers was foiled when he was asked to sing the Malaysian national anthem, Negaraku.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, a foreign man, believed to be in his 30s, claimed to be local when he was detained during the Malaysian Immigration Department’s (JIM’s) Mega Ops at an apartment in Bandar Sunway on Thursday (May 22).

However, his false claim was exposed when he was asked to sing the national anthem as evidence of his claim, leading him to give the excuse that he had forgotten the song.

“I’m from here but I forgot how to sing ‘Negaraku’.”

Details of the operation

Immigration Deputy Director-General of Operations, Jefri Embok Taha, shared that the operation started around 9pm, with the cooperation of 390 officers and personnel from various agencies.

Among the agencies involved were the Malaysian Immigration Department of Putrajaya, KLIA and Kuala Lumpur, as well as the General Operations Force (PGA), the Selangor National Registration Department, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) enforcement, and the Selangor Civil Defence Force (APM).

“This large-scale operation involved the inspection of 1,597 foreigners from various countries, and the raids resulted in the arrest of 597 individuals who are illegal immigrants (PATI). All the PATIs arrested were aged between 11 and 59 years old, consisting of 472 males and 125 females,”

“There were various tricks used, including disguising themselves as locals, while trying to delay the inspection by not opening their doors, and some even tried to escape when they realised the presence of the authorities. However, with the efficiency of the Immigration Department and the assistance of the various agencies involved, all these attempts were successfully thwarted,” he said.

Among the offences identified were no identification documents, overstaying, unrecognised cardholders and various other offences that violate the Immigration Act.
