A foreign woman was willing to run about 200 meters in high heels, despite being 6 months pregnant, because she did not want to be arrested by Immigration Department (JIM) enforcement officers in Medan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur, last night (Thursday, April 17).

According to a report by Kosmo, the 38-year-old woman who did not have identification documents suddenly fainted upon her arrest before being woken up by enforcement officers and provided with paramedic assistance.

Investigations found that the woman had been living in Malaysia for 3 months as her husband worked as an engineer at Port Klang.

“My husband just returned to India yesterday, he wants to pick up his mother and our children and bring them here. I ran because I saw others running. I panicked. I have my passport, but I didn’t bring it with me; I left it at home,” she said.

‘Mini Dhaka’

The woman was among several other illegal immigrants (PATI) who tried and failed to escape from JIM officers.

Immigration Director-General, Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, shared that a total of 749 foreigners were checked in a 2-hour integrated operation last night (Thursday, April 17), and 506 of them were suspected of violating immigration laws.

Pregnant 2

“Among the offences identified were no identification documents, violating pass conditions, overstaying, unrecognised cardholders, and other offences violating the immigration act,” he said.

Commenting further, Zakaria said an inspection of a 4-storey flat building at Medan Imbi, also known as ‘Mini Dhaka’, found that most of the illegal immigrants detained rented rooms for around RM600 a month.

“Most foreigners rent houses or rooms here but work elsewhere. They are quite comfortable because their community is here. One room can accommodate 5 to 6 people. A house has 5 rooms, so imagine how many people can fit in there. Some even add small rooms so that they can rent to many people,” he added.

He emphasised that enforcement operations at Medan Imbi will be carried out continuously and suddenly, to ensure compliance with the law by employers and foreign workers.
