Will motorcycles be banned from entering highways in Malaysia? Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook addressed the matter during a press conference today (28 January).
According to Loke, any proposal to limit the entry of motorcycles onto highways must be discussed practically, as the government is required to conduct a comprehensive assessment. This is necessary to identify both the feasibility of the plan and its impact on other road users.

The suggestion aims to reduce road conflicts, particularly during peak hours
Loke revealed that his Ministry has received the proposal from highway operator PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS). However, he stated that whether such a plan can be executed remains to be seen.
The remarks were made in response to suggestions that motorcycle access be restricted based on specific time slots or engine capacity limits. This follows a sharp rise in fatal accidents involving motorcyclists and pillion riders over the past three years.
The pros and cons of the proposal
During the press conference, Loke pointed out that it is important to observe the feasibility of the plans and whether they could be executed effectively. He added that other road users could potentially benefit from a reduction in illegal motorcycle racing if riders are not permitted on certain stretches.
However, there are notable disadvantages to consider.
Restricting motorcycles on highways could cause significant inconvenience to riders who genuinely rely on these routes for their daily travel.

Moreover, Loke explained that the matter is not entirely under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport (MOT). It also involves the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), the Ministry of Works (KKR), and the highway operators themselves.
