An elderly man who continues to work despite his advanced age is facing the immense challenge of caring for his frail, bedridden mother.

The story came to light after Malaysian philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, better known as Uncle Kentang, was approached by the elderly man. The man urgently needed help moving his mother from the third floor of their apartment building to the ground floor so she could be taken by ambulance to the Cheras Health Clinic.

A plea for help

Taking to Facebook, Uncle Kentang recalled how the man, who is in his 60s, had contacted an ambulance provider and was quoted RM460 for the service.

After being informed that the ambulance provider did not assist with carrying patients down from the third floor, he turned to Uncle Kentang and his team for help.

“The son then called us, and I told him we would only charge a minimal fee of RM150 as we operate on unsubsidised fuel, while our subsidised fuel allocation is very limited and insufficient. When I climbed the stairs to the third floor and entered the house, I saw a frail woman lying on a thin mattress, wrapped in diapers,” Uncle Kentang wrote.

A philanthropist’s generosity

Upon seeing the situation, Uncle Kentang immediately told the man that he would not be charged a single sen, out of respect for his dedication and determination to care for his mother despite the challenges he faces.

He highlighted that the elderly mother is dependent on a Ryle’s tube, meaning she cannot swallow solid food and must be fed entirely with milk.

Deeply moved by the scene, the philanthropist expressed his admiration for the devoted caregiver.

“Bless you, son. Thank you for taking care of your mother when many fail to do so. Never abandon your mum,” Uncle Kentang wrote.

He concluded the post by offering a reassurance that the family would not have to face their hardships alone, promising: “My team and I will give you our full support.”
