AI basics will be taught in schools starting in 2027
The Education Minister revealed the matter in a Parliamentary written reply on 21 March responding to a written question from Labis MP Pang Hok Liong who wanted to know whether the Education Ministry plans to introduce AI-related subjects in primary schools to produce skilled workers in the future.
As shared by Harapan Daily, Fadhlina said that her Ministry is committed to producing a skilled workforce equipped with AI knowledge and skills.
She added that this would enable Malaysia to remain competitive in this digital era.
Accordingly, starting in 2027, the school curriculum would include a new “Fasih Digital” or digital savvy competency as part of the 7 competencies that must be mastered by students.
Fadhlina asserted that digitally literate students are capable of applying knowledge and skills in problem-solving, as well as creating something new by using the concept of computational thinking.
She further elaborated,
“Among the digital knowledge and skills that will be implemented in the new curriculum are AI-related lessons. Students will be introduced to the basics of AI at the primary school level in the new technology and digital subjects.
“Further exploration and application of AI will continue in the same subject in secondary school, including in the computer science information and communications technology, as well as the design and technology subjects.”
