The Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), Aiman Athirah Sabu has urged for strict action to be implemented to block pornography websites in Malaysia. Blaming the internet for the rise of child sexual crimes in our country, Aiman Athirah said that the problem needs to be given attention and awareness in the community.

As reported by BERNAMA, the KPWKM Deputy Minister stressed that child sexual crimes are happening because of social media and the influence of the internet. She further associated the problem with the uncontrollable use of the internet to view pornography websites.

Aiman Athirah, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sepang asserted that the problem is difficult to contain when the community is exposed to so much influence through mobile phones, television and the internet.

Commenting on a recent statement by Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan on how sexual crimes against children and women in the country increased last year, the KPWKM Deputy Minister elaborated,

“Strict action needs to be taken to directly block pornography websites as they can be accessed at any time… KPWKM cooperates with several related agencies including police and the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) including the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).”

“The ministry will continue to examine the space (laxity) and factors that lead to this rampant crime and needs to be jointly dealt with involving all parties,” she added.

Among the steps taken is a Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) team under the Sexual, Abuse and Child Investigation Division (D11) which is currently improving measures involving crime on child victims. Previously, Abdul Jalil Hassan shared that sexual crimes against children and women increased to 12,890 cases in 2022 compared to 11,092 cases in 2020.
