A student from China, who had fallen victim to a job scam syndicate in Myanmar, was allegedly released by the ringleader after considering that the student may have a bright future ahead.
According to a report by SCMP, this all started when the 19-year-old student named Peng, from China’s Shaanxi province, had travelled to Xi’an City in search of job opportunities during the summer holidays after taking China’s national college entrance exam.

During this time, he went on a job search application and came in contact with a woman who offered him a role as a live-stream host due to his good looks. Having agreed to the gig, Peng headed to Yunnan, where he was transferred around a lot before he disappeared.
When Peng’s mother attempted to call him, a man picked up and stated that he was from Myanmar. Feeling uneasy, Peng’s mother immediately alerted the police, which led to an investigation that made China’s national news.
What had happened to Peng?
It turns out that, after being transferred around, Peng indeed ended up in a scam syndicate compound in Myanmar.
While the syndicate shaved Peng’s head, they did not force him to participate in scam activities.

Later, the ringleader of the syndicate went up to Peng and highlighted his young age and the fact that he had just taken his college entrance exam. Finding this to be an indication that Peng has a bright future ahead, the ringleader ultimately chose to let Peng go.
However, it is unclear how the ringleader knew that Peng had just taken the exam.
“He told me they make money with a ‘conscience’, so they let me go. He also told me to study hard and be good to my parents.”
Peng was eventually transported to a United Wa State Army (UWSA) base, where he joined a group of rescued scam victims who were being sent back to China.
“When I realised I was rescued, I was so happy. I was finally going home,” Peng added.
