A mother can care for 10 children, but the 10 children may not be able to care for their mother.
As for local celebrity chef, Chef Wan Ismail, he’s not only shrouded with the concern of taking care of his dementia mother, but he’s also regretful about his siblings, who seem to refuse to take care of their mother who is unwell.
In his Instagram post recently, Chef Wan’s home nurse was seen accompanying his mother for a walk around the house after breakfast.
Her mother was unhappy about the walk but for the sake of her health, Chef Wan had no choice but to persuade her to do so, instead of leaving his mother in front of the screen or lying down on the bed, which does not help her blood circulation.
“We still need to encourage her to walk. It helps her blood circulation and avoid her muscle from being stiff.”
He then said that caring for a 90-year-old dementia person is far from easy.
Aside from her deteriorating Alzheimer’s disease, Chef Wan’s mother is also suffering from cancer, and he emphasised that taking care of his mother is not a walk in the park. As her memory loss has worsened, she finds it tough to carry out even simple activities, such as picking up the spoon.
“At times, she just stares and the plate and does nothing. That’s because the brain that sends the signal to pick the spoon up and eat is no longer functioning anymore.”
Not only that but her toilet routines also have to be assisted by Chef Wan himself, and the home nurse.
“She no longer knows what to do. She can’t even tie her own cloth. Eventually, she might not even recognise all of us.”
Brothers and sisters, please do come home!
Unfortunately, his mother’s condition is not his only dilemma. Despite having informed his siblings about the condition of their mother, none of them apparently showed any interest in spending quality time with her.
Chef Wan said that whenever the matter is brought up, the same siblings start to point fingers at each other and decide who should be taking care of their mother.
Tired of the “dramas”, Chef Wan decided to just let it go.
“But when it’s time for celebration, such as mother’s birthday, everyone comes. But not when our mother needs to be taken care of,” he explained.
Chef Wan also made it clear that he was not going to beg his siblings to come to visit.
“Do you expect me to worship them and ask them to come to visit their mother?”
Taking care of the elderly with illnesses is no easy feat, but they should always be cared for to make sure they’re safe and secure, especially if they’re of our own flesh and blood. Do you have any experience on taking care of the elderly?
