It was recently revealed by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir that an estimated 430,000 National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers who have graduated have not paid their loans amounting to RM6 billion.
According to a report by Kosmo, he shared that some of these borrowers had graduated decades ago but never repaid their loans, leading to the amount increasing as the years go by.
This has left Malaysians with a bad taste in their mouths, as many condemned these borrowers for not paying their debts.
“If you have a high-paying job, you are still secretly running away from your PTPTN debt, standby as many problems will await you later. (Get) ready to be blacklisted from making any bank loans,” a Malaysian said, believing that borrowers who choose not to repay their loans will face consequences if they proceed as such.
Another local pointed out that PTPTN borrowers should live modestly and condemned those who avoid paying their debts while living luxurious lifestyles.
“(It’s their) attitude. Debt is still debt. Alhamdulillah, after graduating and working in a factory, I started paying off my PTPTN loan, even if it was just RM50 (a month). Little by little, it’ll be over. I just use a motorcycle to travel to work,”
“Don’t be lazy in paying off your PTPTN debt, even RM50 a month is enough. Pity the new borrowers. Debt is still debt; don’t be lazy. (Some people) can buy a Honda but cannot pay their PTPTN (debt),” they added.
