Here in Malaysia, we take food seriously. We make our food with dedication, serve them with passion and savour every single bite of it. It is no wonder we managed to get into different food lists every year!
Recently, CNN has released their Asian food list, “50 of the best street foods in Asia,” and of course, several Malaysian foods are listed there. It is worth noting that the sub-regions of the Middle East and Central Asia were not included in the list as they have an extensive amount of dishes.
Topping the list is a Sri Lankan pickle dish named Achcharu and coming right behind it is our very own Asam Laksa. CNN described it as “a big, delicious bowl of soup that just hits the spot… it’s surprisingly refreshing even on hot, humid mornings.”
The rest of the Top 10 are in this order: Bahn mi, Vietnam (#3), bubble tea, Taiwan (#4), bun kebab, Pakistan (#5), Cheong fun, Hong Kong (#6), chilli crab, Singapore (#7), crab omelets, Thailand (#8), curry fish balls, Hong Kong (#9) and ema datshi, Bhutan (#10).
The kaya toast, also described as the “charcoal-kissed breakfast sandwich” ranked 23rd and has dual origins from Singapore and Malaysia. The 37th-ranked dish was nasi lemak, our national dish, and the 39th-ranked dish was rojak.
The favourite South East Asian dish, roti prata, or as we refer to it, roti canai, is number 40 on the list.
There were no additional Malaysian foods on the list, but the fact that there were 5 food items is unquestionable evidence that we are making good food!
There are undoubtedly many other tasty street snacks. Which one is your favourite?
