Previously, we shared about the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul banning Members of Parliament (MPs) from using their devices to livestream speeches in Parliament.

Following the announcement, Arau MP Dato’ Seri Shahidan Kassim has questioned the decision in Parliament twice to both Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Puan Alice Lau and Dato’ Ramli Nor respectively.

When he raised the matter during the Dewan Rakyat morning session yesterday, Shahidan also notably lodged a complaint about there being too many photographers inside the House, claiming that MPs can’t even sleep for a while without having their photos taken.

During the session, the Arau MP questioned what exactly the ‘devices’ mentioned by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker referring to, whether it be a microphone, a smartphone, tablet or even a piece of paper can be deemed as a ‘device’.

He further claimed that the directive banning the usage of devices to livestream is incompatible with Standing Order 35(1) of the House that the Speaker made.

Shahidan then questioned why there were many cameramen in the Dewan Rakyat and why they could use their own devices to snap photos, asserting,

“I want to ask, these cameramen, there are a lot of them. How come they are allowed (to use their own devices) and enter the House and take photos?”

“When we sleep even for a while, they snap photos. How can this be? Whose order was this from?”

Deputy Speaker Alice Lau then had enough of Shahidan’s antics and told him to stop wasting time and sit down, which he eventually did.
