Just recently, according to Utusan Malaysia and China Press, a group of single men aged 40-79 has formed a “Single Men’s Club”.

This “Single Men’s Club” is made for men who choose not to get married because of how expensive weddings are. According to one of their members, they’d often gather at a harbor in Teluk Intan.

When being interviewed, Mr. Leong, aged 63, said that he chose not to get married because the wedding costs were too high.

“Back then about 10 years ago, weddings would cost at least RM50k, nowadays it could go up to RM300k. I only have a normal job, how am I going to be able to afford it?” he said.

Mr. Lee, who is now 79-years-old said that he used to have a girlfriend back then.

“She wanted to get married and her family asked for RM25,000 as dowry. I was a farmer back then, and didn’t have that much money. In the end, we broke up and I just try my best to forget about the relationship.” he mentioned.

Mr. Lee also said:

“I see my friends getting married and moving to the next “stage” in life. But, I also see them going through a lot of hardships trying to maintain the marriage.

Seeing them go through disappointments and hardship made me feel more certain of my choice of not getting married.

Wedding banquets would cost a lot of money, and after the ceremony, you’ll have to take care of your partner for the rest of her life. You’ll also have to save up to buy a house and a car, it’s really a lot of money.”

According to China Press, their most recent gathering was to celebrate the upcoming National Independence Day.
